Liquid Refrigerant Flooding
Liquid refrigerant flooding is the most common cause of compressor failure. If the refrigerant does not absorb enough heat in the evaporator coil, liquid refrigerant will return to the compressor. When this occurs it is often referred to as flooding.

The leading cause of refrigerant flooding is low load on the indoor coil, which is often the result of low airflow across the indoor coil.

When flooding occurs compressor failure is sure to follow. Even though the scroll compressors are more tolerant of liquid refrigerant flooding, they are not immune to its affects.

A side affect of refrigerant flooding is noise. Scroll compressors will often operate at an elevated sound level when flooded with liquid refrigerant.
